What breeds make the best family dogs? When adding a new puppy or dog to your family, it can be difficult to decide which is the best fit. Dogs and children make the best combination! Not only are they both bundles of joy, they have enough energy to keep your children entertained- provided you've landed on the right breed. These dog breeds are a great place to start.

The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America’s most popular dog breed. The breed is best known for their obedience, loyalty, playful composure, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog. They make great family dogs as they are gentle with kids.

French Bulldog

The bright, affectionate Frenchie is a charmer. Dogs of few words, they don’t bark much, but their alertness makes them excellent watchdogs. These dogs are very fond of people, and becomes particularly attached to his family. The French Bulldog is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of 11-12 years.

Golden Retriever

Goldens are outgoing, trustworthy, and eager-to-please family dogs and are fairly easy to train and get along in just about any home or family. They take a joyous and playful approach to life and maintain this puppyish behavior into adulthood. These energetic, powerful gundogs enjoy outdoor play. They’re great with kids. So if you want a loyal, loving, and smart companion, consider adopting one of these pups into your pack.

Pugs thrive on human companionship. They’re highly sensitive, and though they can make for great apartment pets, they will not appreciate being left home alone for long hours of the day.  Pugs are happy in the city or country, with kids or old folks, as an only pet or in a pack. They enjoy their food and do best in moderate climates—not too hot, not too cold—but, with proper care, Pugs can be their adorable selves anywhere.

Beagles are active companions for kids and adults alike. They are merry and fun loving, happy, and companionable. All these qualities make them excellent family dogs. But being hounds, they can also be stubborn and require patient, creative training techniques. These are curious, clever, and energetic hounds who require plenty of playtime.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier’s all-around beauty, regal grace, and even temper mark him as one of the best choice for home owners. They get along nicely with children and other dogs. Adaptable Cavaliers do equally well with active owners and homebodies—depending on an owner’s lifestyle. This breed is known for generally being incredibly affectionate, sociable, happy-go-lucky, and eager to please.

Poodles are regarded as one of the most intelligent breeds in the world. They’re highly trainable and well suited for just about any task you put them to. Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart “real dogs” of remarkable versatility. Bored Poodles can get destructive if they aren’t physically and mentally stimulated. But active owners who can meet their dog’s needs will find a loyal family companion.

Smart, active, and super loyal, Vizslas are a friendly breed that enjoys burning their energy outdoors, whether hunting or jogging with their owner. Athletes of many talents, Vizslas excel at various sports and activities. Vizslas form a tight bond with their owners and hate to be left alone.

Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is primarily a beloved companion dog breed. Beautiful to look, Cocker’s cheerful nature also makes them a treat to have in the family. Cockers are eager playmates for kids and are easily trained as companions and athletes. They are multitalented dogs.

The Newfoundland is a large, strong dog breed. These noble giants are among the world’s biggest dogs, and acquiring a pet that could outweigh you comes with obvious challenges. Sweet-natured and responsive, they make a wonderful family companion as well. The breed is watchful and trustworthy, and tolerant of the behavior of children.

Collies are sensitive and intelligent dogs, known for their loyalty and the amazing ability to foresee their owners’ needs. They are described as strong, loyal, affectionate, responsive, and fastCollies are famously fond of children and make wonderful family pets. Give them lots of love and companionship, and they’ll give it back tenfold to all members of their pack, including kids.

Bichon Frise

A lapful of charm in a cotton-ball cloud of curly white hair, the Bichon Frise is one of the sweetest and most affectionate of dog breeds. They are adaptable companions who get on well with other dogs and children. Alert and curious, they are lovers, not fighters, and operate under the assumption that there are no strangers, just friends they haven’t met yet. However, they do need plenty of playtime and activity.
